Tobacco Cessation Specialist Training

  • It’s a billable service when conducted by an MD, NP or PA
  • Group and individual counseling reimbursed by Medicaid
  • Is a “Best Practice” for treating tobacco dependence


This program is offered FREE for Medical Practice Professionals

Physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, dentists, social workers, wellness coordinators, psychologists, and other medical practice professionals



By attending this program, participants will:

  • Be able to provide smoking cessation individual and group counseling services for patients
  • Become knowledgeable of the cycle of addiction and how to effectively guide patients to become tobacco free
  • Understand the biological component of nicotine addiction and the vital role of the FDA approved cessation medications
  • Learn how to address smoking cessation with patients who are not ready to quit by using Motivational Interviewing techniques
  • Evidence based recommendations designed to assist clinicians and tobacco cessation specialists

About the Program
This training program has been developed by the Center for Smoking Cessation at Seton Health, which is one of the 19 Cessation Centers that are funded by the Department of Health in NYS. Cessation Centers are charged with the mission to work with health care facilities to ensure that they have implemented as a system the Public Health Service Guideline Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence. The Center has worked with over 500 health care sites in the Capital Region.
