Ask.
- Ask every patient about tobacco use at every visit.
Advise.
- Say, "As your health care provider, I strongly recommend that you stop smoking."
- It's a teachable moment; link their health with advice to quit.
Refer.
If a patient is interested in quitting, many resources are available. Refer them to one of these:
Fax to Quit program
- Download Fax to Quit form (PDF) here
- Ask them to fill out the form and fax it toll free to 1-866-QUIT FAX.
- A smoking cessation specialist at the NYS Smoker's Quitline
will call and counsel the patient and fax follow-up information to you.
Offer Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) Buproprion (Zyban®) or Chantix (Varenicline)
- They can be extremely effective in helping people quit smoking.
